Interview with Gerardo Loidi (TL Total Life)
Gerardo Loidi was born in La Plata City, Argentina. In 1963, swept up by Beatlemania, he began playing guitar and singing with friends in his neighborhood. He later joined another group, and in 1974 he and a friend began writing songs and formed a group of their own. In 1978 they recorded an album at CBS Columbia in Buenos Aires, Búsqueda (Search), which is now on Spotify and YouTube. He left the group in 1979.
With a degree in Geology earned in 1977, Gerardo worked as a geologist in the oil industry in many places around the world from 1979 to 2016. In 2017 he found himself with music again, writing songs and recording them at home, then mixing and mastering them in a recording studio in March 2019. Now a solo artist and singer-songwriter under the brand TL Total Life, he released his debut album, Coming Back, in April 2019, followed by Doing It on My Own in August 2022. Both are on Spotify.
Was there something or someone who was the "catalyst" for you to go into music? Tell us about it.
I started in 1964, influenced by the Beatles. In 1978, I made a record with a group of friends at CBS Columbia.I left the music in 1979 And Worked as a geologist until2017 when I started to make songs again.
When did you first realize that music was something you wanted to pursue seriously?
Since the beginning, with an interval of 38 years.
Who were some of your earliest musical influences, and how have they shaped the artist you are today?
Beatles, YES, Genesis, PinkFloyd, Crosby Still Nash and Young. But it does not means that I try to copy them, I want to have my own style
Was there a particular song, artist, album, or moment that changed the way you viewed music?
The songs and artists that I mentioned above.
Let's get this out of the way: what is the craziest thing that has ever happened in your music career?
I will say the amazing thing was to have my A Great Love song on USA radio station from August 2019 to December 2019
What has been the biggest highlight of your music journey so far?
To be number one in the Independent Music Network and National Radio Hits charts.
What has been the biggest challenge you've faced as an artist, and how did you overcome it?
Always was and is the lack of enough money to invest.I spend already 30,000 USD during these years, but with poor results.
What is one moment in your career that you wish you could relive?
To redo again the album that we recorded in 1978.But I am ok with what I am doing at the present time
How would you describe your music in three words?
Acceptable quality, about the genre could be Americana, Adult Contemporary, Ballads.
How do you approach songwriting? What does your creative process typically look like?
First, I start with the melody that then inspires me to write something about a person or events.
Where do you usually find inspiration for your songs?
The lyrics appear most of the time when I go for a walk.
Is there a particular song you've written that means something especially personal to you? Tell us why.
There are many really. At the moment I have 190 songs. But only 18 songs are on Spotify in two albums.
If someone is discovering your music for the first time, which song would you recommend they listen to first? Why?
The song is A Great Love, because of the story in the lyrics.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about pursuing music but is afraid to take the first step?
If you never try you'll never know.
If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice about your music career, what would it be?
To be more patient and do not give up. Easy to say but difficult to accomplish.
When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
To read books and watch videos about history and science.
Is there anything else you would like fans to know?
At the moment I am 79 years old, my message is that it is never too late to do something that you long so badly, but you think that the train is already gone. Maybe the train it is waiting for you to be on board.
