Michelle Lockey is an accomplished recording artist, singer-songwriter, and producer based in Maryland. With a long list of accolades to her name, Michelle has solidified her reputation as a respected artist in the music industry. She has been nominated for several awards, including the Hollywood Music In Media Award, the Global Music Award Bronze Finalist, and the Washington Area Music Award. Michelle has also won multiple awards, including the Grand Prize in the 2013 John Lennon Song Contest in the Folk category for her song "Your Footprints," which she co-wrote with Paul Otten. She also won the Silver Award in the Songwriter's Association of Washington Mid-Atlantic Song Contest.
Michelle's music has been featured on a variety of platforms, including TV shows, films, and commercials. Her work has appeared on popular shows such as The Young and the Restless, The Voice, and Longmire, as well as in films like Speed Kills and Hallmark's Hope at Christmas. Indie, moody, emotional, explorative
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else? Tell us why.
I like the evolution of the song, taking it from idea to where we start recording. When the words and music come together and evolve into something awesome, then I feel immersed in the song & feel that I can really express what I am trying to convey in the lyric.
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
I record a lot of my vocals at home, but when I do go to a studio - I like to be comfortable. Comfortable with my producer, the feel of the studio, and that I can express myself however I want. I like to have fun during the entire process. I feel the vibe and energy when everything comes together and when I leave I feel like I have accomplished good things.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
Walking the dog, going to wineries, little weekend mini trips, watching movies with friends, singing on my church's worship team.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
Jelly Roll. Where he has been to where he has gone is amazing. He is a real honest person & a believer. He expresses himself truthfully in what he says and the songs he writes. I think that way of doing things can reach & help the most people. Broken people, who admit they are broken, are the ones who help us the most. Just all around great music by him.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
The song that is the most emotional hasn't come out yet. But it is part of a bigger album project where I explore my past & present and try to work out some of the emotions stemming from things that happened to me and how they formed me. Currently Why Don't They Choose Me? is an emotional song exploring those feelings in grade school, high school situations or any situation where someone does not feel liked, feels bullied or made fun of, and just wants to be liked, popular, fit in & be noticed. It explores some dark emotions and thoughts about oneself. This can also hit us today as we strive for likes and follows on social media. The song explores and expresses these feelings but also gives a bit of hope toward the end.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
I am working on a very personal album that should be coming out in early summer 2024. This album has a couple single releases out already with one more coming sometime between January 2024 and spring. The song has been recorded and all the music video footage has been filmed, I just need to sit down and edit it. The song is called Who Hears the Broken and has to do with childhood trauma (something I experienced) & especially females who have low self worth. The song goes deep but does give hope and encourages girls & women that they can do anything they set their mind to.
